Robert Upshaw made his first appearance as a Los Angeles Laker on Friday, and he already impressed them enough to sign a 2-year non-guaranteed deal.
According to Chris Haynes of Cleveland.com:
Undrafted free agent center Robert Upshaw and the Los Angeles Lakers reached an agreement on a two-year deal, league sources informed Northeast Ohio Media Group.
The seven-footer would have been a lottery pick had he not been kicked off of two collegiate programs (Fresno State and Washington) for disciplinary reasons. His skill-set has never been questioned. It was his character that was cause for concern.
In his first game he wrapped up with 3 blocks, 2 points and 6 rebounds and that is good enough to get a spot in training camp with the Lakers. The 7’2 Center with a 7’5 wing span has a lot of room to improve, but in a bench position he can thrive on the defensive and rebounding end of basketball. If Hibbert ever gets hurt, Upshaw can step in. Upshaw will make it to their training camp for sure, it’s just the question of if he’ll make it past that with all his issues regarding discipline.
