Kyrie Irving last hit the court for the Boston Celtics on March 11th but he only played 16 minutes in the Celtics loss to the Indiana Pacers. He left the game with some knee soreness, an issue that has sidelined him randomly throughout the season. Now as the Celtics prepare for the homestretch of the season going into the playoffs, the health of their All-Star guard is at the top of their list of concerns.
After taking some time to consider all of his options, Irving will reportedly undergo a ‘minimally invasive procedure to alleviate irritation in his left knee’.
The Celtics officially announced the news on Friday afternoon.
The Boston Celtics announced today that guard Kyrie Irving will tomorrow undergo a minimally invasive procedure to alleviate irritation in his left knee. Further information will be provided following tomorrow’s procedure, and the team will have no further comment until that time.
It’s important to note this is the same knee Irving fractured during the 2015 NBA Finals and sidelined him for most of the first half of the 2015-16 season. Irving also reportedly threatened to undergo a knee surgery if the Cleveland Cavaliers did not trade him over the summer. Kyrie has denied those claims. Celtics general manager Danny Ainge also noted that Irving might need to have an offseason procedure to properly correct this knee issue.
After seeing All-Star forward Gordon Hayward go down in the first game of the season, the Celtics had relatively good health from their main rotation players for a majority of the season. But after the All-Star break, players in Boston’s rotation have dropped one after the other.
Reserve big man Daniel Theis is out for the remainder of the season, Marcus Smart just underwent a surgery on his hand/wrist and Al Horford has also recently missed a couple of games due to nagging injuries.
We shall update you on Irving’s return when more information is available.
