The Nebraska Cornhuskers have added Western Illinois guard Kobe Webster to their roster for next season. Webster was a star guard for Western Illinois and is pursuing a graduate transfer to the Cornhuskers. He will have one year of eligibility to use for head coach Fred Hoiberg. This is a massive pickup for a Nebraska program trying to rebuild a struggling program. Kobe Webster can be a leader next year that bridges a serious experienced talent gap for the Cornhuskers.

Fred Hoiberg’s first year wasn’t the ideal start, but not unexpected considering the throw together roster he had to compete with. Nebraska’s roster will look completely different next year and the addition of Webster gives the team a legitimate go-to scorer on the roster. He averaged over 15 points per game all three years with Western Illinois. His assists per game also hovered right around 3.5 per game in his three years with the team. The rebounding dropped off some in his third year but overall he’s been consistently good.
Webster’s junior year saw him average 17.1 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game. Nebraska and Fred Hoiberg desperately needed a player of this caliber on their roster. His field goal percentage his junior year was 41.7 percent. He also shot beyond the arc fairly well at 33.3 percent. It cannot be understated how good of a pickup this is for the Cornhuskers. The Big Ten could very well be wide open next year. Fred Hoiberg wants to get the Cornhuskers into the NCAA Tournament fairly quickly in his tenure with the program.
Kobe Webster may be enough to get the program over the hump, but rebuilding is never quite that simple. Moving up to a bigger conference could also help any pro basketball aspirations that the guard has in the future.
