Allow me to take you all back to last summer. When Carmelo Anthony was a free agent, he had 4 choices. Houston, Chicago, Los Angeles (Lakers) or the Knicks.
We called it. The “MeloDrama”. It was two months of rumours and reports.
But then it all started to gain pace. Out of the blue he ruled out LA. Rockets, Bulls and Knicks were left. Everybody said “go for Chicago” and that’s what it was looking like as he then ruled out Houston.
We all thought he was going to Chicago. Surely he couldn’t go back to New York. The writing was on the wall. They were going to tank, Chicago were on the cusp of being a Finals team. He said himself he wants a ring. It was looking a certainty!
And then he announced that he was going back to New York. And we all collectively face palmed as the news broke.
Why am I bringing you back to this aggravating “Bash your head against the wall” time? Because according to the New York Post, Carmelo Anthony and Kobe Bryant met and they both agreed that it would not work.
“They came in at the 25th hour, they swooped in there,’’ said Anthony, who owns an apartment in Los Angeles. “It was a great visit. The conversations I had with Kobe was just man to man. We both had to come to reality and say, ‘Is this what we really want?’ And it didn’t happen.
“We’ve been talking for a long time, man, especially this summer, just me and him communicating, and talking and being honest with one another as friends and brothers should be. It was a lot going on there on his behalf and my behalf trying to figure everything out.’’
I’m glad they saw the light. Because that would be some partnership. Stylistically. I don’t think they would’ve had any chance to work. Byron Scott would’ve been snapping clipboards every game.
But there is a little part of me that would’ve loved to see it. What if they could make it work? Oh well. It’s a dream only NBA2K can fulfill I guess.
