New York was not the premiere destination for basketball this past offseason. The Knicks only proud free agent decision was the sharpshooting Courtney Lee. His offensive fire power and willingness to play defense had the organization starving for another player of his capabilities.
So, according to Ian Begley of ESPN the Knicks are on the prowl for two way players like him.
The club has preliminary interest in veteran free agent P.J. Tucker, per league sources. Jeff Hornacek coached Tucker in Phoenix and praised him last season as a strong locker-room leader and intense defender. Tucker shot 35.7 percent from beyond the arc last season, including a 40 percent clip after being traded to the Toronto Raptors.
New York has also shown preliminary interest in New Orleans Pelicans forward and free-agent-to-be Dante Cunningham, per sources.
Many in the Knicks organization are also high on Spurs wing Jonathon Simmons (as are 29 other teams). But Simmons will be a restricted free agent, so San Antonio can match all offers made to the 27-year-old.
The Knicks have had a rough few seasons. Drama, poor play, and even more drama has plagued the team for years. Phil Jackson will try to right the ship before it’s too late and it appears he will attempt to do that with solid, two-way players. Now, Knicks fans just have to hope he doesn’t dish out bad contracts like hors d’oeuvres like he did last offseason.
