On Friday, Shams Charania of The Vertical reported that the New York Knicks were signing point guard Ramon Sessions to a one-year deal at the veteran minimum. The Knicks didn’t offer the same type of contract to Derrick Rose, who started 64 games for them last season, reports Chris Chavez of Sports Illustrated. Chavez was also told by B.J. Armstrong, Rose’s agent, that Rose didn’t want his role with the team to be that of a mentor to eighth overall draft pick Frank Ntilikina:
“Did we miss something?,” Armstrong told the Post. “Is there something going [on] in New York we didn’t see? We all would agree they are on a different timeline than Derrick — a young team with great young talent there and trying to build something for the future. They’re not on the same timeline as players who are a little older and experienced.”
“You’re a mentor when you no longer can play,” he added. “This league you get paid to perform. You don’t get paid to be a mentor.”
Rose signed a one-year deal at the minimum with the Cleveland Cavaliers earlier this month.
