Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson has accepted an invitation to defend his title in the 2017 NBA Three-Point Contest at this year’s 2017 NBA Three-Point Shootout, according to ESPN’s Chris Haynes. The event takes place February 18th during the 2017 NBA All-Star Weekend.
Thompson’s backcourt teammate and fellow Splash Brother Steph Curry has also been invited. Haynes reports that the two-time MVP of the league is still deciding whether to participate or not. Curry won the contest in 2015 hitting 27 three-pointers, a record that Thompson tied last season.
Portland Trail Blazers guard CJ McCollum already accepted his invitation last week, as did Dallas Mavericks guard Wesley Matthews. With Thompson, that makes three of the eventual eight contestants confirmed. Thompson is fifth in the league with 149 three-pointers made, while Matthews and McCollum are 10th and 12th respectively. Curry leads the league at 199 makes from behind the arc.
It is also believed that Cleveland Cavaliers guard Kyle Korver has been invited to the contest, per ESPN.
This all comes on the heels of the Warriors 126-111 demolition of the Charlotte Hornets. Curry and Thompson combined to go 17-25 from three-point range in that game. Curry is shooting 66.6% (20-30) from behind the arc in the past two games.
The rest of the participants will be announced February 2nd on TNT.
