Killer Mike continues speaking his mind on current events.
The Run The Jewels rapper vented on Instagram about his feelings on Vice President Mike Pence leaving Sunday’s game between the Indianapolic Colts and the San Francisco 49ers. Pence, the former governor of Indiana, attended the game but left after several 49ers kneeled during the national anthem.
While the players kneeling was expected, it wasn’t a surprise to NFL fans. Last year, former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick sat, then kneeled, during the national anthem to protest structural racism and police brutality in America. Since then, dozens of players kneeled to show solidarity with Kaepernick’s protest.
This season, the protests have become more polarizing. Some players, like current 49ers safety Eric Reid, continued to kneel. Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins chose to show solidarity through a raised fist. Other teams tried finding common ground to display unity — standing and locking arms, kneeling before the national anthem, or not being on the field for the anthem at all. NFL teams began these performative gestures after Donald Trump insulted the players who do kneel. NFL teams and their displays of unity were criticized for missing the point of the protest.
“I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color,” Kaepernick said in August 2016 when asked about why he was protesting. “To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”
Killer Mike begins his post highlighting a contradiction by Mike Pence. Why is it that players kneeling is so offensive, when they are exhibiting their First Amendment right, Killer Mike asks. “Free speech is what protects this and any protest. The constitution that guards against Tyranny like the state abusing and denying citizens full rights. U know the stuff that prompted the kneel,” Killer Mike states in the Instagram post.
