Here’s a fun story and also a bit of a slap in the face if McHale gets a job somewhere else.
So you might remember Kevin McHale getting fired by the Houston Rockets early in the regular season that we just had. That firing happened on the 18th November. On the same day, Danny Ainge took to the phone to show support for his long time friend. And also offer him a job.
“Danny and I are very good friends,” McHale said, “and once he heard about it, he basically called up and said what a bunch of BS it was, first of all. He said, ‘I feel bad for you.’ Then he said, ‘Any job you want up here, you just let me know.’?”
“Danny said, ‘You want to help the big guys? You just want to come in and see where it fits? You just tell me. Whatever you want to do, you let me know and we’ll make it work.’
“So that’s just the kind of guy he is. And he and I have sat down and spent thousands of hours talking basketball, so we know each other pretty well. But it meant a lot, because Danny’s a good guy, and when something like that happens, it’s really nice to have your friends reach out like that.”
The question now is, after all this time, is he still considering it?
“I’m going to wait and see what goes on,” he said. “At that time I said, ‘I’m just going to chill out for a while and just kind of see where everything goes.’ I told Danny, ‘I don’t have any plans to do anything, except I was planning on coaching tonight in the game, so I guess I’ll change that plan.’
“I just really don’t know what I want to do yet. But I’m not ever ruling out anything.”
Well there you have it! The offer is still on the table and Kevin McHale is still marinating on it. Probably more so now than before. He would be a great specialist coach, dropping some great knowledge on working the post.
