In the offseason, the Cleveland Cavaliers had some big names they needed to keep on the squad for another run at the NBA Finals. The 2015 Cavs free agents included LeBron James, Kevin Love, Iman Shumpert, J.R. Smith and Tristan Thompson, players who were all important pieces to Cleveland’s championship aspirations, in one way or another.
All of the players seemingly signed with the Cavs without any major hiccups, except for Tristan Thompson who has yet to sign a contract. For Love, the running narrative for a majority of last season even into the offseason was that he wouldn’t be sticking around in Cleveland for long. He and LeBron James don’t get along and the Cavs are moving on without him.
Well, now the fans of Cleveland, LeBron James and the Cavs organization are stuck with Love. Five more years of Love, to be exact, and for Kevin, the decision was close to a no-brainer.
Love told the following to Fox Sports Ohio.
“It’s always what I had in mind,” said Love about re-signing. “In order to be happy, win and also make money doing what I love, it all came to place and always made sense to be here….
“It made it a pretty easy choice.”
The Cavs re-signed Love almost as soon as they could, ending almost all doubt on Love’s future in the NBA. The only question that remains is how will Love take the next step for Cleveland? Can he return to his 20 & 10 form that he took as a member of the Minnesota Timberwolves or will he digress into a lesser role.
First things first for Love, he has to get healthy. The Cavs start had his season end abruptly in the first round of the NBA playoffs when he suffered a shoulder injury. If he comes back healthy and if the Cavs still are without Kyrie Irving for an extended period of time, expect Kevin to get a lot of Love from LeBron James.
