As the struggles and drama for the Cavaliers continue to rise, the questions and concerns come along with it. They have acquired some talent in the form of 2 separate trades earlier this week, acquiring 2 wing players in J.R. Smith and swiping a center away from Denver in the form of Timofey Mozgov.
Now there still is the question of the guy who was the hot topic for Cavaliers fans all summer. No, not LeBron James, he was settled in back in July. It’s Kevin Love, and what he might do this summer.
The 19-18 Cleveland Cavaliers aren’t exactly what you would call dominating, like many thought they would be and now, there may be some serious questions about Love and where he stands at the end of the season.
From Jason Lloyd of the Akron Beacon-Journal:
Love is unlikely to sign long term this summer because of the salary cap. He is expected to opt out of his current contract at the end of the season for cap purposes, but he might only sign a one-year deal to line up for what is expected to be a significant cap spike in the summer of 2016.
Love has said all the right things about re-signing with the Cavs this summer and the Cavs continue to insist he’s here long term. Executives around the league, however, continue to believe Love could leave Cleveland at the end of the season. We’ll see. There is still a long way to go.
So it looks like it’ll be more of a strategy for Love to get the most out of what he can get in 2016 in an even bigger deal when the new television deal money kicks in. Sticking with the Cavaliers will be in the best interest of Love, he can make the most money by succeeding with the best player in the world and they can dominate the NBA together once the right pieces get together and start meshing but for now, if this doesn’t work, Love might be going somewhere else for another year.
