The Cavs have been trying to make a move at the deadline, but they haven’t made anything happen yet. They were extremely successful last season with the acquisitions of JR Smith, Iman Shumpert, and Timofey Mozgov, but this season they have not acquired anyone yet.
Recently, Shumpert and Kevin Love have been involved in trade talks, including a trade that would send Love to New York for Carmelo Anthony, but according to a post from Ohio.com writer Jason Lloyd, neither Love nor Shumpert are going anywhere.
“Kevin Love and Iman Shumpert are expected to be in Cleveland after the deadline, according to one source with knowledge of the team’s thinking, as is Anderson Varejao. All sources were granted anonymity given the sensitive nature of trade talks.
The Cavs are committed to winning a championship with Love this season, and while Shumpert is having a down year shooting, he remains the team’s top perimeter defender.”
Love’s relationship with his teammates has gotten a lot better this season, especially considering that he seemed to just be in the corner of the locker room last season and left out. He helps the Cavs make space for LeBron in the paint, and he can always knock down jumpers.
Shumpert would be an extremely valuable trade asset because he can shoot well and play good defense, but despite being in a rather down year on offense for him, he is the Cavs top defender right now, and they don’t want to give that away.
If the Cavs make a move at the trade deadline tomorrow, it will likely be to improve the bottom of their rotation. They have recently been interested in Channing Frye, but no deal that they will make will have Shumpert of Love involved.
