Kevin Garnett is a loyal player. After being drafted straight out of high school by the Minnesota Timberwolves in 1995, he spent 12 straight years there, despite always being surrounded with a very sub-par supporting cast. Nevertheless, he always remained faithful to Minnesota. The fans loved him, and he loved being a member of the Timberwolves.
In 2007, though, Kevin Garnett was traded to the Boston Celtics. In Boston, he and Paul Pierce were the vocal leaders. They led their team to a championship in KG’s first season there, which we all know Garnett was very excited about after trying to propel a weak team to the Finals year after year in Minnesota.
After his 6-year tenure in Boston, he was once again traded, this time to the Brooklyn Nets. That trade never panned out for Brooklyn, as Garnett and Pierce were both getting way up there in age. The fans in Brooklyn never had a chance to see Garnett at his best, and never truly loved him as Minnesota and Boston fans did. Garnett spent under 2 years in Brooklyn, before being traded back to his original team, the Timberwolves.
Garnett never got truly attached to the fans in New York, and most of them never got truly attached to him. So, when he was recently asked to compare Boston to Brooklyn, he said that he preferred Boston. From Sam Galanis of NESN:
“Right, Boston a little more than Brooklyn,” Garnett said recently, per the Star Tribune. “Just because the times and the memories are more impactful memories. But both were good times.”
When he was asked which city — Boston or New York — had better fans, the answer was clear:
“Bostonians all day,” Garnett said. “And they know that.”
As a lifetime Boston fan myself, I can firmly say, yes we do, KG. Yes we do.
