Since signing with the Golden State Warriors, resident “good guy” Kevin Durant has shocked everybody with his thinly-veiled insults about the Oklahoma City Thunder. Most recently, he said that he and Russell Westbrook were never anything more than “work friends.” Durant also complained about the Thunder’s refusal to add a proven veteran. From Paul Solotaroff of the Rolling Stone:
And he held his tongue when, summer after summer, the Thunder declined to add a proven third option – think Ray Allen in Boston, or Love in Cleveland. “Where other teams went out and got that veteran guy, we kept getting younger,” he says with a sigh, pushing around a sausage link with his fork. Apparently it’s exhausting, even in memory, to carry a team on your back.
Durant had to deal with one of the best offensive players in the world (James Harden) being traded for scraps. However, the idea that Durant wanted a “proven third option” seems flawed. This statement, of course, insinuates that the Thunder were lacking a proven third option; what’s Serge Ibaka, chopped liver? I don’t blame for Durant for this, though, because as far as I know he didn’t say it. He is quoted as saying that he wanted older players, but unless the author decided to omit it, Durant did not specifically say that he wanted a “third option.”
