Kevin Durant has been very outspoken these past couple of years. And it’s been very interesting. For a guy that has a very simple life compared to most NBA stars that are on his level. When he talks. It’s always a must read. His documentary last year really shined a light on him and the way he approaches life. And still, every time he participates in a full length interview. We always find another dimension of Kevin Durant.
This time, he talked to fashion magazine GQ. But fashion was the last thing they talked about. KD revisited some of the subjects during his documentary such as the MVP speech. He talks about love, his retired nickname “Slim Reaper”. But the paragraph that caught me, was when he was talking about his upcoming free agency in 2016 and his loyalty to the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Don’t forget, Kevin Durant was not selfish: He signed a full extension in 2010, no opt-outs. He remembers that, even if no one else does, even as he anticipates the lurking storm of recrimination that awaits him if he doesn’t re-up again. “I was loyal. If it comes down to that, I mean: I was. My deal’s up in 2016. I’ll have been here nine years. I could have easily wanted out. I could have easily not signed the extension after my rookie contract. I could have not played as hard every night. But people tend to forget.” Same thing happened to LeBron James, when he switched teams and they burned his jersey. Kevin watched it like, Damn. “This is not just a game for us. This is life. Like, we live and die and breathe by basketball. We’re away from our families to entertain other people.“
When LeBron James went back to Cleveland, that’s when the speculation really gained steam. Will KD leave OKC and go to Washington? Personally I think he should. Whether he will actually go through with it is a different story. The fact that he’s saying that he could’ve left if he wanted to. I don’t know what to say about that. You all might see that and go “OMG! He’s going to Washington!!!” Calm down. He’s been in Oklahoma for all of his professional career (barring the Seattle stuff) that must count for something no?
