More than halfway into the season now, it seems as though superstar forward Kevin Durant has loved playing alongside his new point guard Stephen Curry. After seeing how what many would consider a rocky relationship between him and Russell Westbrook can make a team implode deep in the playoffs such as Oklahoma City did last year, it was important for Durant to get along with his new floor general.
The Warriors have dominated again this season with a record of 39-7 and while there have been some rare bumps in the road attached to assimilating Durant, the relationship between the Texas product and Curry has always been a good one.
The respect between the two teammates continues as Durant praised Curry when asked about getting used to each other’s presence this season. Following from Alex Butler of United Press International:
“I don’t think either one of us look at it as being the star of this team,” Durant said. “I think that’s what makes it easier to play together and we are just out there trying a good brand of basketball and trying to have fun…Play off of each other, use each other. You need your teammates if you want to be successful. We realize that and it just makes it easy.”
“He [Curry] has no ego. It’s really unbelievable. How big he is as a person, as a player, and to not really care about stuff that everybody else cares about outside our group is pretty remarkable. It’s different. When you see people like that.”
Curry is averaging 24.6 points per game this season after leading the league in scoring and taking home the MVP award just last year.
For Curry it has to have been a tough transition from being the clear-cut number one option to now having to share the spotlight with a player on your level. Selflessness like that certainly garners some respect and Durant clearly recognizes that. With the All-Star break less than a month away, the healthy relationship between Golden State’s two leadmen should help them cruise towards the intermission.
