I think we can all agree that this free agency is the most pivotal when it comes to the legacy of Kevin Durant. If he takes a max, multi-year deal to wherever he chooses, we can be assured that he will need to get rings in that time period.
Now if he just gets a 1-Year deal and waits until Russell Westbrook is a free agent, then he is just holding back the inevitable. At some point he will need to commit somewhere and again, wherever he goes, rings will need to be on his finger when that contract ends. This season we might be seeing him gain that elusive ring and that’ll be great if he gets it, but the free agency period will be interesting if he doesn’t win the NBA Championship.
KD is part of the Roc Nation Sports agency, remember when Jay-Z helped start that and we all thought that they would take over the agency game? Well they didn’t achieve world domination but they got some good names. Robinson Cano, Skylar Diggins and of course Kevin Durant to name a few. KD’s personal agent Rich Kleiman (There are so many agents with the name “Rich”.) has recently talked with the Washington Post and knows the magnitude of his clients offseason.
This summer represents a milestone moment for the young agency: NBA star Kevin Durant becomes a free agent July 1, the biggest chance yet for Roc Nation to show it’s more than flash and bravado. While basketball observers increasingly feel Durant might be sticking around Oklahoma City for at least the short term, the folks around Roc Nation are giving away few secrets about what kind of contract might be in store.
“We know this is a big deal and a big moment in his career,” said Rich Kleiman, Durant’s agent with Roc Nation, who worked with hip-hop stars such as Wale in a past professional life. “We also have to be his guiding light in this. We can’t let the pressure of the situation be bigger than it is. Obviously, we understand all eyes are looking at him and looking at his decisions, and people want to see how we’re going to handle it, too.”
Honestly, with OKC finally playing at the level we know they can play at, I think Kevin Durant will stay for at least another year. Before the Playoffs there was a hint of general frustration from KD. I think he loves the people he has playing with him but constantly being underwhelming messes with you.
But the Thunder currently have the World Champions on the ropes and with the season, in my mind a successful one, whatever happens with the rest of the Playoffs, we will see KD in a Thunder jersey for at least another year.
