When the Golden State Warriors signed Kevin Durant to a two year deal worth upwards of $54 million, it was clear that Harrison Barnes’ time with the team had come to an end. When Barnes commented on what happened, he came off as a tad bitter, saying: “I guess I died.”
On Friday, Durant was asked about it (by a child), and didn’t sound too sympathetic:
10-year-old in crowd: "What do you think Harrison Barnes thinks about you taking his spot?"
Durant: "I think he just got paid $95 million."— Mike Finger (@mikefinger) September 9, 2016
Durant is right that at the end of the day, it’s hard to feel too bad for a guy who just signed a $95 million contract. However, it can’t have been fun for Barnes to be forced out of the team that he’s played for for four years — especially given how dominant of a team it is.
In Dallas, Barnes will have far more responsibility on the offensive end. As we’ve never seen Barnes be given such a heavy scoring load, it’s hard to say whether or not he’s capable of handling it. It should be interesting to find out.
