The San Antonio Spurs are so enticing as a franchise they’re now at that level where they can persuade players to take a pay cut in exchange for a legitimate chance for a ring.
Case in point. David West. For most of his career he’s been on half decent Playoff teams but never championship calibre. His teams could never take that step forward. As much as he loved the Indiana Pacers, he left money on the table and went to San Antonio to finally get that ever elusive ring.
Kevin Durant, who’s recently been heavily connected to the Spurs as a potential free agent landing spot, likes the attitude that David West took.
“I respected it,” Durant said Saturday of West’s decision to leave $11 million on the table in Indiana to sign a one-year, $1.4 million veteran’s minimum deal with the Spurs.
“Money isn’t everything in this life,” Durant continued. “I know we tend to think about taking care of your family and being financially stable, but from the outside looking in, it looked like he said, ‘I’ve been blessed enough to make X amount of dollars, and I want to be happy chasing something that is the grand prize in this league.’ ”
Now let’s not get ahead of ourselves here. He’s just saying that he respects David West in how he went about free agency. It just so happens that Kevin Durant is a free agent after this season and is now talking about wanting to chase the “grand prize”.
Please don’t go to San Antonio Kevin Durant. Anywhere but there.
