The Boston Celtics tried to do special things so that Kevin Durant would sign with them, and they almost worked. Boston teams are close with each other, so the Celtics tried to bring as much star power to the meeting as they could. Tom Brady and David Ortiz showed up so that they could help sell how great Boston is to play in. According to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne, it almost worked:
Kevin Durant on Tom Brady, “I was ready to just say, ‘OK. Lets go.’ It’s great to be in the presence of such greatness. But at the same time I knew I couldn’t let that distract me.”
Brady is one of the world’s biggest sports stars, and it is clear that even stars like Durant get starstruck by him. Durant in Boston would have been fun, and he would’ve likely won a championship there. It is too bad that it didn’t work out, and we all know that in the end the Golden State Warriors swooped in and convinced Durant to sign with them, creating one of the greatest teams in NBA history.
We will never know how good the Celtics could have been if they had signed Durant, but it is clear that Golden State was the best option for Durant to win a championship.
