The Boston Celtics believe that they will meet with Kevin Durant this summer, and they likely will. Why? Well, first off they look to be a team that Durant could likely go to. He would fit in well around Boston’s young core. Second, they seem to have already had preliminary conversations with Durant’s agent. Oh, and let’s not forget Isaiah Thomas’ recruiting attempt from earlier today. According to Butch Stearns of WEEI, the Celtics have met with Durant’s agent, and Durant’s agent likely gave them a list of players Durant wants to play with.
“I have this on pretty good authority. The Celtics have sat with his agent and other representatives of Durant. The Celtics do know — I don’t know who it is — but they do know who he would prefer to be brought here in a LeBron-Chris Bosh–Dwyane Wade-like way. Because that’s how it works in the NBA. You need to know who the guy or guys that that guy wants, which would be a factor.
Now, I don’t know if Durant’s told them that. But the Celtics know. They know. They’ve been told what group of guys he would want to come here.”
The Celtics likely won’t be the only team that receives this list of Durant’s hopeful future teammates, but they sure did get it early. While Durant’s agent isn’t supposed to be meeting with teams just yet, the Celtics are fortunate to know who they will need to target in order to hopefully get Durant.
The Celtics will have room for one and possibly two max contracts this summer, and they would be wise to use one of them on Durant, but who would they use the other one on? Probably one of the players that Durant wants them to sign. Even if they do sign these players, it is not guaranteed that they will acquire KD, but it puts them that much closer to being able to sign one of the leagues top players.
