Director Kenya Barris and producer Pharrell Williams are reportedly in talks with Netflix to develop a Juneteenth musical. Early reports suggest that the project is in very early stages of development. However, Deadline was able to confirm that this project would be separate from another musical that was confirmed to be in development back in 2018.
I’m asking every governor to make Juneteenth a paid holiday for state employees. Thank you @GovernorVA and @NYGovCuomo for leading by example.

Kenya Barris previously developed a live Juneteenth special for his sitcom, Black-ish, back in 2017. Barris also took part in a special conversation with the Black-ish cast yesterday. Meanwhile, Pharrell joined Virginia Governor Ralph Northam this week to announce that Juneteenth would now be honored as a paid holiday. Shortly thereafter, he joined Rapsody on social media to urge North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper to do the same.
As of yet, there are no further details about a plot, casting or title. More details will be revealed as the project dives deeper into development.
