Kentucky basketball has dealt with rumors of Hall Of Fame Coach John Calipari’s possible departure, each season he’s had success and built relationships with his players who go on to become successful NBA players.
With The Cavaliers reportedly going all in last season and teams possibly lining up to make another run at him the Wildcats are trying to thwart any possibility of him leaving this summer.
Calipari and Kentucky are reportedly close to an extension that would pay him $8 million a season through 2022. That extension would include a $1.6 million dollar bonus if he remains the head coach after July 1st.
Would teams be willing to wait that long if they desire Calipari? Can a team afford to do so? No. Calipari needs to come to a decision if he wants to close the door on the NBA or give it another shot.
Calipari has always been on the fence about making the jump once again, but has decided to remain in Kentucky. The University of Kentucky clearly knows what a monumental loss this would be for them, and they’re more than likely willing to give Calipari whatever he requests (if they haven’t already).
If Calipari makes the jump to the NBA the only jobs I can see him going for would be Chicago to reunite with Derrick Rose or the New Orleans Pelicans with Anthony Davis.
Either team has playoff potential while The Bulls are more championship ready, the Pelicans are also improving.
I’m not ruling out any other destination especially since we may see another opening since the post-season hasn’t ended yet.
If the Cavaliers are eliminated do they make a run for Calipari? Four time MVP LeBron James and Coach Cal are good friends, but I cannot see The Cavs firing Blatt after one year.
I think if LeBron requests for Calipari Cleveland could make a run after him once again, but why would Cal make the jump next year? Especially leaving all the money the Cavaliers reportedly offered him last season.
I think Calipari stays in the college ranks for good, and signs this extension. Calipari has established an excellent program in Kentucky and he’s contending for NCAA Championships year in and year out.
Calipari making the jump certainly would grab headlines in the sports world, and would intrigue any basketball fan. What are the odds two of college basketballs best coaches leave in the same year?
Will Calipari follow Billy Donovan to the NBA?
