Kawhi Leonard is the reigning Defensive Player of the Year. Now the fact that he shouldn’t have gotten it is besides the point. What matters is that he is a good player in a system that is perfect for him.
Sooner or later, Tim Duncan & Gregg Popovich will hand the keys over to Kawhi Leonard and now LaMarcus Aldridge, but Kawhi won’t wait for the ‘experienced’ personnel to retire, he wants to dominate now, he wants All-Star and MVP accolades.
“I guess I’m a competitor,” said Leonard, who noted that winning championships is what motivates him to work hard and grow as a player. “I didn’t … come to the NBA for the glamor, I just wanted to help my family and help myself. I just wanted to do something I love; I’m not out here to be a famous athlete.”
Now that’s he’s reached a new plateau professionally, Leonard says he’s ready to make another big leap. […] “I want to to be an (NBA) all-star and MVP of the regular season,” said Leonard. “I’m trying to be one of the greatest players so whatever level that consists of is where I want to take my game.”
Now he can get an All-Star appearance, maybe. But MVP? I really don’t see it. Spurs are way too team orientated, this ain’t the Finals where a couple of standout games gives you an MVP. You got to dominate for a whole season. Individually.
