Another historic moment for Kanye West.
The Life of Pablo is the first album to go gold in the U.K. on streaming only. According to the British Phonographic Industry, an album is Gold if it sells 100,000 units. The Gold status for albums was introduced to the U.K.’s charts in 2015. An album goes platinum in the U.K. by selling 300,000 units. In April, The Life of Pablo was the first streaming-only album to go platinum in the United States.
There were no physical copies of The Life of Pablo available when it was released. It dropped as a Tidal exclusive in February 2016. (also, Kanye wasn’t done working on the album, tweaking it after its release.) The Life of Pablo was first available on Tidal exclusively, then it was available on Apple Music and Spotify two months later.
The rest of 2016 was up and down for Kanye. He took a meeting with Donald Trump, reignited his feud with Taylor Swift, called out Jay-Z and Beyoncé, ended his tour early (and is currently in a legal dispute about that), and he was hospitalized in November.
Thsi year, Kanye is expecting his third child with Kim Kardashian West, Pusha T said his next album has Kanye’s fingerprints all over it. It’s possible that a Kid Cudi and Kanye album could happen. Yeezy fans were overdue for some good news.
