Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, has found himself in yet another legal battle. This time, Kanye West is reportedly facing a multi-million lawsuit regarding a Boogie Down Productions sample used in the 2021 track, “Life of the Party” featuring Andre 3000.
The 2021 track features the Chicago native rapping alongside Andre 3000 over a smooth production that samples “South Bronx” by Boogie Down Productions and KRS-One. Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, reportedly initially attempted to clear the sample through traditional channels, but later retracted his attempt. As a result, the two sides did not come to a licensing agreement when the track was featured on an extended version of Donda available on the Stem Player. In response, Phase One Network, the company that owns the rights to the track, has filed a lawsuit seeking to obtain profits that West and company made in the production and sale of the Stem Player.
Phase One Network is just the latest party to engage Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, legally. Less than two weeks ago, Surface Area, an art and retail showroom in Miami’s Design District, hit the Chicago native with a $145,813 lawsuit. Surface Area claims that Ye has not paid for a month-long rental of the space. Additionally, the family of George Floyd filed a $250 million following Ye’s appearance on Drink Champs. During his appearance on the popular show, Ye insinuated that Floyd didn’t die due to the actions of Derek Chauvin, but rather he died of fentanyl use.
“Kanye’s comments are a repugnant attempt to discount George Floyd’s life and to profit from his inhumane death,” Attorney Pat D. Dixon III said.
“We will hold Mr. West accountable for his flagrant remarks against Mr. Floyd’s legacy.”
