Kanye West is projected to have the number one album on the charts in the upcoming week after selling upwards of 220,000 units during his first week. In addition to releasing a new album, West has also put out a new film to accompany his album. After a weekend in theaters, West’s Jesus Is King film has pulled in $862,000 at the box office nationwide. Worldwide, the film pulled in $1.04 million. This is below expectations for a film that was shown at more than 300 IMAX screens in major cities like New York, London, Chicago, Mexico City and more. On average, West’s film puled in just over $2,000 per screen nationwide.
In comparison, other specialty films like Parasite and Jojo Rabbit pulled in over $1 million each. In West’s defense, his film did have limited showtimes. Unlike many other specialty films, West’s film was not made through a major studio. Many IMAX theaters have deals with major studios which contractually obligates them to play certain movies a certain number of times. As a result, West’s film was shown in between those major studio projects.
