Texas was already expected to lose a ton of talent from their upperclassmen but their first underclassmen departure has just been announced. Kai Jones has decided to declare for the draft and hire an agent forgoing his remaining years of eligibility. Jones is a sophomore and was a top 50 player in the class of 2019.
Jones only started in 14 of the 53 games he played in, 10 of those coming his freshman year. He didn’t get much of a chance to start this year until teammate Greg Brown had an outburst on the bench during the Big 12 Tournament. It led to more minutes and starts for Jones in which he played fairly well in the games down the stretch. Jones is an incredible athlete and credits his track background as a long jumper for his springy ability on the basketball court.
Texas big man Kai Jones has declared for the 2021 NBA draft, he announced. Jones is currently 8th on my big board. He’s a super fluid, athletic big man with untapped perimeter skills and mobility on defense.

Jones is a player scouts seem to love with the ability to knock down perimeter shots and guard perimeter players. He’s someone who was able to switch just about every position this season playing for Texas. He needs to continue to put on weight but his leaping ability allowed him to be a menace on the offensive boards. If a team can tap into all that potential they could truly unearth a gem in this supremely talented draft class.
