This story I found interesting, simply because we all thought the same thing. When Justise Winslow was there dangling in front of the Heat, everybody was like ‘no way the Heat got this lucky’. But even though he was snubbed of sorts, you look at the picks teams made above and totally understand why they made those picks (Except maybe Charlotte. Kaminsky was a bit random for them)
You can look above the No. 10 pick and say ‘I see why they didn’t take Winslow’. But with this little tidbit by Grantland’s Zach Lowe, we ask again why was Winslow snubbed?
Twenty-nine teams rolled their eyes in June when Justise Winslow fell to Miami at no. 10 in the draft. Winslow may never become a star, but he has a chance at it, and he blew away executives during the draft interview process. That kind of upside is rare in the no. 10 slot. It is the kind of upside that can change the course of a franchise.
So he bossed the interviews, was it because he doesn’t have the crazy upside? Was it because they simply didn’t have need for a 6″6 two-way Rookie?
Whatever it was, we go back to just saying that the Heat were in the right place at the right time. Even though Winslow was rated 6th-7th in most Draft Boards, the teams in that area simply went with needs over who impressed the most in interviews. Crazy to think that the Sacramento Kings took the rational route.
