State lawmakers Justin Jones and Justin Pearson will return to Nashville, Tennessee. In April, both Jones and Pearson were expelled from the state legislature. On Thursday, both men were victorious in their special elections. Jones captured more than 75% of the vote in the House District 52 race while Pearson earned more than 90% of the vote in the House District 86 race in Memphis.
“Congratulations [Justin Jones] on your decisive victory and return to the Tennessee legislature! So pleased that the voters have sent you back where you belong — pursuing justice and opportunity for the people,” Rep. Nancy Pelosi tweeted.
“Despite craven politicians trying to usurp the power of the people, tonight democracy won again in Tennessee. Congratulations, [Justin Pearson and Justin Jones]. Keep up the good and necessary trouble,” Senator Raphael Warnock added.
The road to Election Day was not easy for either lawmaker. Four months ago, Pearson, Jones and their colleague, Gloria Johnson, interrupted proceedings to join a protest in support of further gun control in the state after a mass shooting had taken place. In response, Pearson and Jones were expelled from the legislature while their colleague, Johnson, was not. The decision to expel Pearson and Jones prompted criticism from across the country, including the White House.
“You’re standing up for our kids, you’re standing up for our communities,” the President said.
“Nothing is guaranteed about our democracy — every generation has to fight for it.”
Pearson and Jones will have more time to fight for their constituents in Memphis and Nashville as they begin their term in Tennessee.
