
Making a case for the most significant news story of the superhero movie era, Joss Whedon is reportedly nearing a deal with Warner Bros. to direct, write, and produce a standalone Batgirl film for the extended DC Comics Universe.
Variety first broke the story, reporting that Whedon recently met with the president and chief content officer of Warner Bros. Pictures Group, Tony Emmerich, along with Warner Bros. executives Geoff Johns and Jon Berg.
This news, of course, comes off as a bombshell because of Whedon’s history with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, having written and directed The Avengers and The Avengers: Age of Ultron. Apparently, he will now be in service of the uprising DC Comics Universe, which has Wonder Woman and Justice League releasing this year.
While Batgirl isn’t seen as a mainstream hero for the big screen, she has immense popularity from comic book fans. Barbara the daughter of James Gordon and has a long history of working with Batman. Gordon is played by J.K. Simmons in Justice League, which leads to wonder if there are any inferences to Barbara’s existence in the film. Other questions about connections and casting will start brewing as Warner Bros. and DC Comics have made a power play for their next big female superhero lead.
