There is supposedly a movie in the works that surrounds the life of Russell Poole, the LAPD detective who tried to solve the assassination of one of the greatest rappers ever, Christopher Wallace, aka the Notorious B.I.G. Wallace was assassinated in his car in March of 1997 after an after-party of the Soul Train Awards. Biggie’s death is still one of the greatest murder mystery’s never solved, along with Los Angeles rapper Tupac Shakur’s murder.
Lincoln Lawyer director Brad Furman is slated to direct the movie, and according to the Jeremy Kay of Screen Daily, Johnny Depp is slated to join him as Russell Poole himself:
Depp will star in the feature from Good Films as Russell Poole, the late LA detective who the towards the end of the 1990s investigated the unsolved assassinations of hip-hop icons Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls.
Poole encountered endless dead ends, yet his dogged legwork uncovered corruption in the LAPD that rocked the institution to its core.Brad Furman, who directed The Infiltrator after rising to prominence with The Lincoln Lawyer, will direct Labyrinth from Christian Contreras’ screenplay, based on Randall Sullivan’s book of the same name.
LAbyrinth: A Detective Investigates the Murders of Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G., the Implication of Death Row Records’ Suge Knight, and the Origins of the Los Angeles Police Scandal was written by Randall Smith who recounts Russell Poole’s investigation and the discovery of the relationships between members of the LAPD and Death Row Records.
Production is set to start later this year, but no trailer or release date has been set. With Depp not confirmed the role, but expected to play, you can expect this to be a sure shot for major festivals around the world.
