In game 2 of the 2015 World Series, both the New York Mets and Kansas City Royals had a lot to live up to following the Royals extra innings game 1 win over the Mets. Game 1 was historic, epic and unbelievable but game 2 was a lot less of the same. Kansas City made up for using most of their pitching in game 1 by only using one pitcher for all nine innings, Johnny Cueto.
Cueto had one miscue on the night in the fourth inning when he walked two hitters and allowed Lucas Duda to hit a single and score a run but that was it. Cueto wouldn’t allow anything else on the night besides one more Lucas Duda hit as he went the distance for Kansas City. He pitched nine innings, struck out four, walked three and only allowed two hits and one run. Cueto is the first pitcher since 1995 to have a two hit complete game and he’s the first American League pitcher to throw a complete game in the World Series since Jack Morris did it in 1991. He was masterful and the Royals bats showed up when it mattered most.
The Royals looked confused by Jacob deGrom for the first four innings of the game until the bottom of the fifth came around and it was all Kansas City from there. In that inning alone, deGrom allowed four runs and allowed the Royals to take what would be a commanding 4-1 lead. Coming into game 2 of the 2015 World Series, deGrom only allowed four runs in one inning once all season and only allowed a combined four runs in 20 innings pitched in the postseason.
Kansas City wouldn’t stop there as they piled on when starter turned relief pitcher Jon Niese allowed three runs on three hits and the Royals would extend their lead to 7-1 over the Mets.
Alcides Escobar, Eric Hosmer and Mike Moustakas all had two hits for KC with Escobar and Hosmer both getting two RBIs on the night.
Game three of the 2015 World Series is taking place on Friday as the Mets will host the Royals. Young aces will square off in game three as the Royals will have Yordano Ventura on the mound and the Mets will look towards Noah Syndergaard to get them back into this series.
It will be hard for the Mets to come back being down 2-0 in the World Series but history is on their side. The last time a team came back from down 2-0 to win the World Series, the New York Yankees did it in 1996 and the last time the Mets won a World Series in 1986, the Mets were also down 2-0 in that series against the Boston Red Sox.
