Since entering the league in 2010, John Wall has transformed into one of the elite point guards in the NBA. Most would agree he’s the best point guard in the Eastern Conference today.
His ability to get it done on both ends of the floor this past season put him on another level – passing, defense, scoring, you name it. He averaged a career-high 23.1 points and 10.7 assists per game, and was named an All-Star for the fourth straight time.
But there is one thing Wall has not yet been able to do during his career, and it’s irked him for quite some time: Lead his team to the Conference Finals. Wall spoke to NBA.com about this very subject recently:
“I just want to be in the Eastern Conference Finals and get past the second round. I definitely don’t want to be one of those point guards or those guys that never could get past the second round. I think [if] get to the Eastern Conference Finals and then it’s the first team to four gets a chance to be in the Finals.”
“You couldn’t ask for more than that. We were one game away.”
For Wall, making the Conference Finals will likely be his No. 1 goal this upcoming season. He’s already lead his team to the postseason multiple times during his career, but the third round would be the next step.
“We have to have a championship mindset from the beginning of the first day of training camp if we want to be a team that finally gets over that hump,” Wall told NBA.com. “We talk about getting to certain places but we never start the training camp off with that. If you want to be a championship-caliber team or a team that gets an opportunity to compete for one, you have to start the first day of training camp, and I think that’s the mindset I have going in.”
