Kelly Oubre Jr has come into the league not being afraid of showing off his confidence, but John Wall sees no issue with the rookie. After attending summer league game between the Wizards and Jazz, the franchise guard had nothing but positive things to say about Washington’s draft choice.
“Wall said he’s been impressed with the 15th selection’s game and confident demeanor. ‘Well, that’s what you need,’ Wall said when asked about Oubre’s confidence. ‘I think it’s easy to come in more confident. These young guys are coming in more confident now, the way they’re working out and having these different trainers that some people didn’t get.’ … ‘I think he’s going to be great for us,’ Wall said. ‘I think he’s somebody like Otto [Porter Jr.] but probably more athletic and able to move. Otto is more methodical, moving at his own pace.'”
Hopefully Oubre is able to push Otto Porter and vise versa so the two can compete for time at small forward and stretch four if that is the route Randy Wittman chooses to go. Otto must push Oubre so the team will be better, but the same must be done the other way around so no player feels too comfortable.
Wall and Oubre seem to be off to a good start so far, and with the way the rookie has been playing so far in Summer League, what’s not to like? Currently it appears he will make solid contributions for Washington this season, but those will certainly grow as time goes on.
