After a rough first season with the Columbus Blue Jackets, and then a horrible showing at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey, many fans were ready to write off John Tortorella. But then he shocked the hockey world by leading the Blue Jackets to one of the best records in the NHL. When the NHL All-Star game rosters were announced, the Blue Jackets led the Metropolitan Division, meaning Tortorella would be the coach of the division’s team.
Unfortunately, Tortorella will not be able to coach the team, as he will miss the All-Star game, as well as Thursday’s contest against the Nashville Predators. According to Tortorella, he is dealing with a family emergency which is causing him to miss the two games.
Here’s the statement from Tortorella:
“Regrettably, there is a personal matter that requires my immediate attention that will force me to leave the team temporarily and miss the All-Star Game in Los Angeles. This decision was not made lightly as representing the Columbus Blue Jackets is something I am very proud of, but it is the right decision for my family and I. I appreciate the support of our organization and the National Hockey League and my hope is to be back with the team next week.”
While Tortorella is out on Thursday, assistant coaches Brad Larsen and Brad Shaw will take the responsibilities behind the bench. As for the All-Star game, no replacement as been named.
Tortorella took over the Blue Jackets after a winless start to their 2015-16 campaign, when they started 0-7-0. While the Blue Jackets didn’t show much improvement after the hire, Tortorella was brought back for the 2016-17 season. So far, the Blue Jackets have a 32-11-4 record on the season, which is second in the NHL with 68 points, just a mere 2 points back of the Washington Capitals.
