Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell held a 45-minute meeting with five veteran players before Sunday’s game vs. the Rangers. Dustin Pedroia, David Ortiz, Hanley Ramirez, Pablo Sandoval and Mike Napoli were the five players who Farrell met with. On the heels of an 8-0 loss last night Farrell determined now was the time to get things back on track.
“It was an opportunity to meet with our veteran group, to reemphasize the importance of the role that they provide to the younger players and how they go about and execute inside the game,” Farrell told reporters in Arlington. “I guess the best way to describe it is that there was an opportunity for them to speak. I wanted to get their feedback, I wanted to give them some additional expectations that exist, some ideas that I think need to be carried out. And it was a chance to talk through those and what do we do going forward.”
The Sox enter Sunday with a record of 22-28, last place in the AL East. The good news for Boston is they are only four games out of first place, a manageable margin to say the least. With a deep farm system including Brian Johnson, Eduardo Rodriguez, Henry, Owens, Manuel Margot, Rafeal Devers, and Yoan Moncada the team has the ability to work the trade market. If the teams struggles continue Farrell could ultimately be fired.
