The coach who popularized the one and done system in college basketball no longer wants the rule around. John Calipari recently said at TCU’s basketball clinic that the players should be able to go to the NBA draft right out of high school. Many throughout the basketball world were surprised by Calipari’s comments considering the success he has had off the rule. According to an article in the Star-Telegram Calipari said he met with the NBA Player’s Association one week ago and implored that organization to create a “combine” for high school juniors. This is a rule that has been strongly debated over the past few years with many arguing the rule is unfair to the players.
Adam Silver and the NBA have also looked into changing the rule and many think the rule will be changed in 2020. That is when the next collective bargaining negotiation for the NBA will take place. Momentum is already rolling the direction of eliminating the rule and Calipari is throwing himself right behind it. More coaches may follow suit in the next couple of years as we near the date for a final decision on the rule.
