The Texas Tech Red Raiders and Head Coach Joey McGuire have agreed to a six-year contract extension. This new deal will pay McGuire $26.6 million over the course of the extension. The new deal pays him one million dollars more per year and includes $100,000 annual pay increases and performance bonuses. This new deal with Texas Tech links the football coach to the program through the 2028 season. Texas Tech hired McGuire from the Baylor program this past offseason. There has been a trend this season in college football to extend coaches after their first season with the program.

In his first season with the Texas Tech Red Raiders, Joey McGuire led the team to an overall record of 7-5 including wins over the Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners. This is the first season that the program has beaten both programs in the same season. The news of this six-year extension comes on the same day the team is set to play the Ole Miss Rebels in the 2022 TaxAct Texas Bowl.
Texas Tech Atheltic Director Kirby Hocutt said the following in a statement about the new deal: “I firmly believe our best days are still ahead with Coach McGuire at the helm of our football program. It was evident throughout this football season that he and his staff are building a culture that will benefit this program for years to come. Coach McGuire will be the first to tell you that his goal is not to just play in a bowl game but to win championships, and I believe we are on that path under his direction.”
