Joe Dumars, former GM of the Detroit Pistons, has recently been reported to be looking back into the NBA. Rick Bucher has reported in the past that the Pelicans could take Dumars if they decide to let go of Dell Demps. Demps has been the GM of the Pelicans since 2010.
The Pelicans could also get rid of Head Coach Monty Williams who would possibly be replaced by Avery Johnson. Williams and Demps were hired the final year Chris Paul was there and carried them to the playoffs. The Pelicans have not made the playoffs since that year when they lost in the first round as the 7th seed in 2010. If they fail to make the playoffs again this year, Williams and Demps could be out. If Demps is out Joe Dumars may be the candidate to replace him.
Joe Dumars is the former president of the Detroit Pistons. Dumars built a champonship team around Chauncey Billups and Richard Hamilton in 2004, and he was also named executive of the year in 2002-03. Dumars has the ability to build teams clearly, as he built a champion in Detroit. Later on, Joe added good players in Greg Monroe, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, and Andre Drummond.
Joe was forced to resign at the end of last season though, and he was replaced by Stan Van Gundy who was hired as the Pistons Head Coach and President of Basketball Operations. Greg Monroe thinks that Joe Dumars deserves another chance, reported Terry Foster of The Detroit News, stating,
“I mean, yeah,” Monroe said. “He put together a championship team. Obviously he knows what it takes to get it done. For a stretch he had one of the most successful teams in the league. Obviously he is good at that job. I don’t see how that would be a problem to get back.”
Stan Van Gundy also said of Joe Dumars on getting another job,
“Joe is a class guy who did a great job and had a ton of success,” Van Gundy said. “Anytime you get good people in the league it is good for the league so yeah absolutely. Joe has a good track record. Hopefully if that is what he wants to do he will get another opportunity.”
Joe Dumars would be a good hire for any team, as he knows how to build a team to win a championship, which he has done already with those great Pistons teams in the mid 2000’s. Anyone that hires Joe has a chance to win a championship, and if the Pelicans do, Joe will be right back in his home state. Joe will be just five hours away from where he was born in Shreveport, Louisiana. Joe also played college basketball at Neese State where he became the 11th leading scorer in NCAA history.
Hiring Joe Dumars would be a great idea for the Pelicans if things don’t pan out with Dell Demps, Joe is a good choice for the Pelicans to help build a championship team around superstar Anthony Davis.
