Geno Smith made his season debut last week in relief appearance for a struggling Ryan Fitzpatrick. Unfortunately, Geno didn’t look too great in his appearance throwing an interception on just 6 passing attempts. NFL Media Insider is reporting Geno could get an extended look with the Jets in what could be the last chance with the team.
Jets coach Todd Bowles will give Smith a fair chance to keep the job and show what he can do, sources informed of the situation said. So don’t expect a short leash for the player who hasn’t started since he was nearly perfect to end 2014.
The team is 1-5, expectations haven’t been met and Fitzpatrick has struggled from the outset. After a drama-filled contract statement this offseason, the player the Jets ended up signing was the same player some believe is the main reason they are flailing. In truth, there has been dissatisfaction with Fitzpatrick’s play for some time.
Jets players such as Brandon Marshall have been very vocal supporters of Fitzpatrick. I’m a bit shocked the Jets didn’t hand the reigns to Bryce Petty. We know that Geno Smith stinks, why not see what you have in Petty. The teams around the league even viewed Petty more valuable in trades. Nevertheless it will be interesting to see how long the leash is on Geno.
