Quarterback is the most important position in football. Giants general manager Jerry Reese had some interesting words regarding the quarterback position in New York. Eli Manning is the team’s unquestioned starting quarterback but it appears the team could be searching for the heir apparent to him.
“We always think about every position, but Eli is 36,” general manager Jerry Reese conceded, via the New York Daily News, in Monday’s season-ending press conference. “We have started to think about who’s the next quarterback, who’s in line. So we’ll look into that as we move through the offseason.”
Backup quarterback Ryan Nassib is also a free agent this offseason adding some extra controversy to this story. The Giants have struggled for most of the season offensively despite the 11-5 record. New York has failed to score 20 points in 6 straight games. Of course, Eli isn’t the only person to blame for those struggles either. Manning, 36, ranked 27th in total QBR this season amongst quarterbacks. It remains to be seen if the Giants will draft a quarterback earlier on in the 2017 NFL Draft. Regardless of what the Giants do, GM Jerry Reese wants to be proactive because you never know how much time Eli Manning has.
“Thirty-six, I don’t think that’s ancient for a quarterback,” Reese said. “I think he’s probably on the back nine, but I don’t think that’s ancient for a quarterback.”
