Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones released a statement on Sunday saying he would bench any players who are disrespecting the flag in a post game interview where he addressed players kneeling.
Jerry Jones: “If there is anything disrespecting the flag, then we will not play. Period. We’re going to respect the flag and I’m going to create the perception of it.”

Jerry Jones: “We cannot in anyway give the implication that we tolerate disrespecting the flag. We know that there is a serious debate in this country about those issues, but there is no question in my mind, that the [NFL] and the Dallas Cowboys are going to stand up for the flag

This is an odd change of stance for the owner who was just kneeling with his players in week 3 after Trump called out protesters. Jones knelt with them as a “sign of unity” to the rest of the country. Jones also met with players and other owners a few weeks ago.

The NFLPA released a statement at the time meant as a response to VP Mike Pence who walked out of the Colts-49er’s game due to what he deemed players disrespecting the flag. This statement can be applied to the Jones comments as well.

The head of the NFLPA, DeMaruice Smith, also released a statment via twitter. He echoed the sentiment that these players are not disrespecting the flag but using their platform to spark conversations on social issues. Something they feel is their duty as American citizens.

All this comes at a time where it seems a few changing their stance, Dolphins owner Steve Ross stated he would like to see his players stand for the anthem. Something his coach is ready to enforce.
