Jermall Charlo defeated Sergiy Derevyanchenko by unanimous decision to retain his WBC Middleweight Title. Charlo won on all three scorecards by scores of 116-112, 117-111 and 118-110.
Charlo jumped out to a quick start by controlling the ring and wobbling the challenger in the third round. However, Derevyanchenko would not go down easily. As he did against Daniel Jacobs and Gennadiy Golovkin, Derevyanchenko’s aggressive style made things uncomfortable for Charlo. He ultimately landed 180 punches, the most any opponent landed on the titleholder. In the end, Charlo’s height advantage, skill and talent won the night.
“I made my team proud and I did what I was supposed to do,” Charlo said.
“I executed the game plan. Ronnie Shields told me that I passed the test tonight. I’m happy to go back to the drawing board now and figure out what’s next.”
Charlo improves to 31-0 with 22 knockouts while Derevyanchenko falls to 13-3 with all three losses coming in title fights.
