After weeks of speculation. It seems that the Dallas Mavericks will not sign Jermaine O’Neal. For the past few months O’Neal has been working out, getting in shape for the second half of the season. The frontrunner for O’Neal was the Dallas Mavericks who desperately need a big man coming off the bench, but according to ESPN.com. Jermaine O’Neal has decided not to return yet has he thinks it’s simply not time yet.
If Jermaine O’Neal returns to the NBA, it won’t be immediately.
The veteran big man said Monday in an Instagram post that the time “isn’t right for me to play now.”
The Dallas Mavericks had been confident they were inching closer to eventually signing the free agent, team sources told ESPN.com in late January. Sources told ESPN.com that the Mavericks had hoped to sign O’Neal by the All-Star break.
Never fear Dallas fans. There may be hope yet. You might be able to sign him, just not now. But for the Mavs. There is no time like right now.
With Tyson Chandler being their main man in the paint, Jermaine would’ve fit in perfectly. But with this gap in the roster. It’s hard for me to see Dallas making moves in the Playoffs. Don’t forget that most of the squad either currently have an injury or have had an injury this season. So that could be a possible deterrent come Playoff time.
