The New Mexico Lobos have picked up the commitment of freshman point guard transfer Jeremiah Francis. He will have to sit for one year, but can then play three years with the Lobos’ program. This is a great pickup if Francis can stay healthy from some high school knee injuries that hampered him with the North Carolina Tar Heels. His decision to transfer from North Carolina was a little surprising but New Mexico is happy to have the addition.
North Carolina transfer Jeremiah Francis has committed to New Mexico, he told @Stockrisers. “I heard that The Pit gets real crazy, I can’t wait to experience that.” Plus, says relationship with staff sealed the deal. | Story: https://t.co/HXVHCuRrId pic.twitter.com/R5EA7JYGXS

Francis only got to play 16 games in his freshman season with the Tar Heels largely because of those high school injuries. This year off could help the point guard rehab and be completely healthy for his remaining college eligibility. It seemed like the Tar Heels had limited minutes at the point guard position with Caleb Love and RJ Davis coming in as freshmen. Francis should see a larger role in his first or second year at New Mexico under head coach Paul Weir.

The freshman point guard only played 13.6 minutes per game. Those limited minutes had him average 3.3 points, 1.3 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game. His field goal percentage was fairly low at 22.7 percent combined with a fairly low three-point percentage of 20 percent. The real story of his freshman year is the flashes of potential he showed off to be a starting college point guard. The talent is there, but the injuries have held him back so far in his basketball career. Hopefully, a fresh start with New Mexico is exactly what he needs to achieve his full potential.
