Academy award winner Jennifer Hudson is back on the big screen as she plays the role of Winnie Mandela in the self-titled film. The official trailer has finally been released as the film has been delayed for some time with buzz over the casting of Hudson and the lack of input from Winnie Mandela herself. Hudson portrays South African leader Nelson Mandela’s ex-wife as viewers will see Winnie’s life from childhood to her marriage to Nelson who will be played by Terrence Howard. The T. D Jakes presented film was originally set to be released in 2011 but will now premiere in theatres on September 6.
Idris Elba will be playing Nelson Mandela in his most recent leading role in the movie Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom alongside Skyfall‘s Naomie Harris as Winnie, as it too will take a look back at the journey from Mandela’s childhood in South Africa to his election as the first black president of South Africa. In an interview with ABC News, Elba explains, “We know Mandela for his years in jail and his years coming out of jail and becoming president but what happened to him prior is the spine of the film and where we get to know him.” The Justin Chadwick directed film is set to be released November 29.
South Africa’s former president Nelson Mandela, who recently celebrated his 95th birthday in July, has been hospitalized for two months following a lung infection and said to be conscious and responsive.
