In 1985 Larry Miller bought the Jazz oversaw some of the most successful and prosperous times that the franchise has ever seen. He was the owner that oversaw the fantastic production for once great Jazz players like Karl Malone, John Stockton, Carlos Boozer and Deron Williams. He owned the team until he passed away in 2009 but the team stayed within his family.
His widow, Gail Miller, currently owns the team, his son Greg Miller is CEO and holds the team’s vote on the NBA Board of Governors and another one of his son’s, Steve Miller, is next in command as president.
Now, there seems to be some new developments with the people at the top stepping down from their positions.
Following from Mike Sorensen of the Deseret News.
Greg Miller, the CEO of the Larry H. Miller Group of Companies, including the Utah Jazz, will step down after seven years to pursue personal interests.
The Deseret News has obtained a copy of the press release announcing the decision. It says Gail Miller, the owner of the LHM group, would transition the Group to a new corporate structure, which will include an outside board of directors.
Besides Greg’s departure, Steve Miller has also chosen to step down from his role as president of Miller Sports Properties to assist in other areas of the family’s interests, according to the press release.
Immediately, with the season coming to an end, it means that there is some sort of uncertainty going forward for the time being. The positions will definitely be filled but by who? Would that also mean that Ms. Miller will be selling the team as well with her sons giving up their positions? Only time could tell. The only issue is now, that with such youth in place, that they can’t bring someone in who rubs the young guys or coach Quin Snyder the wrong way.
One thing is for sure, whoever takes over the positions of CEO and President are inheriting a team with a very high ceiling. The core group of players in Gordon Hayward, Derrick Favors, Dante Exum, Alec Burks, Trey Burke, Rodney Hood and Rudy Gobert are all signed to deals with Utah for at least the next 2 seasons. The ‘Stifle Tower’ alone should be enough to excite anyone wanting to take a position of power with this team due to his potential and tremendous upside.
