Election night is in full swing and history is in the balance. Often times, pundits and commentators will call the most recent election the most important in United States history and these midterm elections were no different. While it’s too early to call these midterm races the most important in history, history can definitely be made. In Georgia, Stacey Abrams has the ability to become the nation’s first black female governor. Further south, Andrew Gillum has the ability to become Florida’s first black governor. Unfortunately, those races are too close to call at the moment. With that being said, a politician further west has already made history. Jared Polis has made history as the first openly gay man to be elected governor.
Colorado governor, Jared Polis, has defeated his Republican challenger, Walker Stapleton, by approximately six percent. Polis will replace two term Democrat, John Hickenlooper. The newly elected governor was previously a U.S. Representative for Colorado’s 2nd District.
Following the election, Billy Eichner was one of the first to congratulate the Colorado governor. Eichner tweeted, “Wow!! Congratulations @jaredpolis of Colorado who just became the first openly gay man to be elected Governor in US History.”
