Over the last decade, James Gunn has written many of the most talked about superhero films, including Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad. Now, he will use his pen to craft the script of the next Superman film. A recent report from The Hollywood Reporter indicates that Gunn will pen a script that dives into the younger years of Superman as he balances his first bylines at The Daily Planet with saving the world from impending doom.
Gunn will pen the script, but he has not yet committed to directing the film. Previously, he has led films like Super and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. If he does decide to direct the film, he will not be leading Henry Cavill. As it stands now, Cavill has spoken with Gunn regarding the project, but he will not play the film’s lead role.
“Peter [and] I have a DC slate ready to go, which we couldn’t be more over the moon about; we’ll be able to share some exciting information about our first projects at the beginning of the new year. Among those on the slate is Superman. In the initial stages, our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman’s life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill,” Gunn tweeted.
“But we just had a great meeting with Henry and we’re big fans and we talked about a number of exciting possibilities to work together in the future.”
Details regarding the film remain few and far between. Due to recent overhauls at DC Films, it is unclear when the next Superman movie will hit the big screen. Additional details will be revealed in the new year.
